Mass spectrometric approaches for chemical characterisation of atmospheric aerosols: critical review of the most recent advances
نویسندگان
چکیده
This manuscript presents an overview of the most recent instrument developments for the field and laboratory applications of mass spectrometry (MS) to investigate the chemistry and physics of atmospheric aerosols. A range of MS instruments, employing different sample introductionmethods, ionisation andmass detection techniques are used both for ‘online’ and ‘offline’ characterisation of aerosols. Online MS techniques enable detection of individual particles with simultaneous measurement of particle size distributions and aerodynamic characteristics and are ideally suited for field studies that require high temporal resolution. OfflineMS techniques provide ameans for detailedmolecular-level analysis of aerosol samples, which is essential to gain fundamental knowledge regarding aerosol chemistry, mechanisms of particle formation and atmospheric aging. Combined, complementary MS techniques provide comprehensive information on the chemical composition, size, morphology and phase of aerosols – data of key importance for evaluating hygroscopic and optical properties of particles, their health effects, understanding their origins and atmospheric evolution. Over the last few years, developments and applications of MS techniques in aerosol research have expanded remarkably as evident by skyrocketing publication statistics. The goal of this review is to present themost recent developments in the field of aerosol mass spectrometry for the time period of late 2010 to early 2012, which have not been conveyed in previous reviews. The Lamiaceae family consists of a broad spectrum of medicinal plants involving Marrubium L. genus. Regarding the diverse pharmaceutical uses of the plants belonging to this genus, they can be considered as proper alternatives for chemical drugs having harmful effects. The present work aims to identify and characterize chemical compositions of the essential oils and volatiles from the aerial pa...
متن کاملAssessment of air pollution in exercise centers and health risks
Background: In recent years, Tehran has faced major problems with air pollution for many reasons, and this issue has become a critical point in most of the days. However, less attention has been paid to the indoor air pollutants in exercise centers and their possible health effects. In this research, it was tried to briefly describe the characteristics and chemical composition of the aerosols p...
متن کاملUsing MODIS data for nonlinear hazard analysis of the Middle East aerosols
Aerosols are among the most important of atmospheric pollutants observed like the microscopic particulate matter in the lower parts of the troposphere. The main purpose of this study is introducing a new method based on satellite images processing results and nonlinear analysis (fractal based) to investigate the origin and dynamical mechanism of aerosols distribution in North Africa and the Mid...
متن کاملMachine learning algorithms in air quality modeling
Modern studies in the field of environment science and engineering show that deterministic models struggle to capture the relationship between the concentration of atmospheric pollutants and their emission sources. The recent advances in statistical modeling based on machine learning approaches have emerged as solution to tackle these issues. It is a fact that, input variable type largely affec...
متن کاملChemical and microphysical characterization of ambient aerosols with the aerodyne aerosol mass spectrometer.
The application of mass spectrometric techniques to the real-time measurement and characterization of aerosols represents a significant advance in the field of atmospheric science. This review focuses on the aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS), an instrument designed and developed at Aerodyne Research, Inc. (ARI) that is the most widely used thermal vaporization AMS. The AMS uses aerodynamic lens i...
